The extensive wetlands and forage in
the area around Arroyo City attract a extraordinary number and variety of birds. Some
of the more common species include, Pelican, Blue Heron,
Rosette Spoonbill, Egret, Cormorant, King Fisher, Osprey, Pygmy Owl,
Wild Turkey, Chachalaca, Harris' Hawk, Kiskadee Flycatcher, Least Grebe, Green
Jay, and Painted
Bunting. There are, literally, over four hundred others that have been
spotted in the area.
The 46,000 acre Laguna
Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge (956-748-3607) holds the record for bird
sightings in the U.S. It boasts nature trails, a visitors center with
exhibits, picnicking, and guided tours. The Adolph
Thomae Jr. County Park (956-748-2044) which adjoins the refuge has camping,
restrooms, showers, RV hookups, lighted piers, and boat ramps.
The Refuge, along with the whole Arroyo Colorado area, are a
major attraction
during the Rio Grande
Valley Birding Festival held in Harlingen annually during November.
The Rio Grande Valley Audubon Alert, is a 24-hour recorded announcement which
provides information regarding unusual bird sightings in the area. The hotline
